Prison sentences – determine by achievment rather than time

Today’s Times – Justice Secretary Chris Grayling has announced plans to raise the good -behaviour threshold for privileges.

Why not try something really different. The only privilege to be release, from a more robust regime, once a step towards a more useful and self-reliant life has been achieved: maths and English at GCSE; the abaondonment of addiction; physical fitness; a practical, employable skill.

Give prisoners something from which they will be keen to escape and an incentive to do so.

Cheaper too perhaps. Weeks rather than months, months rather than years.

For dangerous prisoners who seek prompt release there could be free membership of Dignitas.
