Clare’s Law to protect women from violent partners does not go far enough.

Announced this week – Clare’s Law whereby women, or their families and friends will be able to ask the police whether a boyfriend has a record of violence. Clare Wood, after whom this law is named, had a daughter of one when she was murdered by her boyfriend.

Rather than permitting women to make enquiries regarding a boyfriend’s past, should we not require them to do so before allowing newcomers access to their children’s homes? Professionals who run homes for other people’s children have to do this. Why should the children of lone mothers be denied this element of protection?
