All along the route there were spectators from all over the world.

The phrases are all along the route and from all over the world.

Why are phrases important?

They allow additional information to be added easily to a sentence without the complication of additional verbs. In this case the basic sentence is: There were spectators. The first phrase tells us where the spectators were and the second, from where they had come.
